The Gift of Presence
Share
As December deepens, it’s easy to feel swept away by the busyness of the season. The shopping lists grow, calendars fill with gatherings, and we often find ourselves trying to create picture-perfect holidays. But amidst the hustle, December 7th offers a gentle reminder: the greatest gifts aren’t wrapped in paper and bows—they’re found in the simplicity of being present with those we love.
The Power of Presence
In Luke 10:38-42, we read about Mary and Martha’s encounter with Jesus. Martha is busy preparing, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, fully engaged in His words. Martha grows frustrated, but Jesus lovingly tells her:
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42, NIV)
This passage reminds us of the importance of prioritizing presence over perfection. Martha’s efforts were not bad, but they became a distraction from the gift of Jesus’ company. Similarly, in our lives, we often prioritize doing over being, missing the simple joys of connection.
Practicing Presence
How can we embrace presence during this busy season? Here are a few practical ways:
- Unplug: Set aside time to disconnect from devices and connect with loved ones. Share a meal, play a game, or simply sit together.
- Listen Fully: When someone speaks, be fully present. Look into their eyes, and listen with your heart as much as your ears.
- Slow Down: Embrace quiet moments to reflect, pray, and thank God for His blessings. Let the stillness recharge your soul.
A Present to Give
This season, consider giving the gift of your presence to someone who may need it—a friend, neighbor, or family member. A heartfelt conversation, a handwritten note, or simply your time can make a lasting impact.
Just as Mary chose to sit with Jesus, we can choose to pause and cherish the people and moments around us. In doing so, we reflect God’s love, which is always near, always present.
Closing Reflection
Today, take a moment to reflect: Who in your life might need your undivided attention? How can you invite God’s presence into your own heart during this season?
As we embrace the power of presence, we discover a joy that no amount of holiday preparation can replace—the joy of being fully present with God and those we hold dear.
